<a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2712916">proxuser</a> modified arco's AOSP based kernel a bit by adding some governors, I/O schedulers and overclocking it by adding it 2 extra frequencies; 1.8 and 1.9GHz. In order to be able to use this kernel without any issues, it is highly recommended that you flash it over a custom AOSP based rom such as CyanogenMod, Slim, Vanir, Carbon, etc.<br />

Once you are on such a custom rom, you may download the zip file into your sdcard and flash it through recovery mode.<br />
<br />
Before we go any further, I must warn you that overclocking can be considered to be quite dangerous for the CPU and battery. Just don't forget to give it some breaks if you are planning on using your CPU to the max as it may overheat it or damage your battery. <br />

<li>Download the kernel to your sdcard </li>
<li>Boot into Recovery mode</li>
<li>Go to install zip</li>
<li>Choose to install zip from external sdcard</li>
<li>Once installed, go back and wipe cache</li>
<li>Once cache is wiped, head into advanced (last option) and wipe dalvik cache</li>
<li>Reboot</li>
<li>Use an app such as Nofrill's CPU control to test and see if you have the 1.9GHz frequency available</li>

Samsung Mobile US Press announced yesterday that the smaller sibling of the S4, the Galaxy S4 Mini will become available to the U.S. next month (November).<br />

It is said that the carriers that will be providing the phone will be AT&T, Verizon, US Cellular and Sprint. As for the pricing offered by each of these carriers, there has not been given any information for now.<br />
<br />
On top of everything, Samsung has also said that the S4 Mini will soon receive a firmware update granting it support for the Galaxy Gear. That means if you own a S4 Mini and are planning to get yourself the Galaxy Gear, you will be able to pair it with your phone.<br />
<br />
Compatible S-view flip covers for the phone are also said to become available soon.<br />
<br />
The international version of the phone is already being sold by retailers there at the moment, but once it becomes officially available from carriers, it is expected that it's price will drop.<br />

We all want to get the best out of our phone's battery and have it last long but with this rich in colors Super AMOLED display and a TouchWiz rom filled with services running in the background, it's kind of impossible to achieve that. Now of course you can change that by simply doing some changes on your configuration and settings. If you're already happy with the battery life of your S4 Mini then you may ignore this post.<br />

Tip #1 - Using darker wallpapers</h2>
Don't use colorful wallpapers. Yes, you've heard it right. Although it's pure eye-candy to look at a colorful wallpaper on the S4 Mini's display, it can cost you some battery juice. If possible, stick to a wallpaper that has darker colors such as black and white ones. It should consume less energy.<br />

Tip #2 - Forget Live Wallpapers, stick to plain JPG/PNG</h2>
Yet another sacrifice you must do if you want to save up on some battery juice and that is to refrain from using live wallpapers on your S4 Mini. Sure, it's interesting and makes your phone look cool if you have a moving image on your homescreen but the truth is, it is constantly using your processor to get all of these images to move, which obviously consumes battery. If possible, stick to a simple JPEG/PNG wallpaper and you should be alright.<br />

Tip #3 - Check what is draining your battery</h2>
At any time you can head into your Settings and go to where it says "Battery". In there you will find an informative screen that will rank the top applications and/or services that are draining your battery, you can then consider what is for removal and what is not.<br />

Tip #4 - Use lower brightness</h2>
This one is so obvious, but still worth mentioning. By using your phone on a lower brightness level, you save on battery juice and most of the time the only thing that is draining the battery a lot is usually the screen, so decreasing the brightness level a bit will surely help out.<br />

Tip #5 - Use less widgets on your homescreen</h2>
Placing multiple widgets on your homescreen pages such as weather widgets, e-mail widgets or even just simple widgets can consume some memory on your phone which leads to consuming battery. If you can, remove the widgets that you need less and only keep the ones that you find most useful 100% of the time. Better yet, remove all of them if you don't need any.<br />

Tip #6 - Set your WiFi to sleep when screen is off</h2>
Having your WiFi connection turned on all of the time even when you are not using it - for example, when the screen is off and/or when you are sleeping it is really useless and just leads to battery drain.<br />
Simply head into your WiFi settings and set it to go to sleep when the phone is in idle. That way it will only turn itself back on and connect when your phone wakes up.<br />

Tip #7 - Turn off Smart Stay feature</h2>
Here is another obvious fact and that is that by leaving a feature such as Smart Stay which uses the front camera to detect your face/eyes making the phone's screen to never turn off, could be a battery drainer aswell. You can simply increase the screen timeout and turn this feature off if you are annoyed when your screen goes off after 10 seconds, it's pretty much the same.<br />

Tip #8 - Power saving mode</h2>
You might have already noticed this, but it's definitely a must to turn on the Power Saving mode from your Settings menu. It limits the maximum performance of the CPU, will reduce the screen power and will change a few other things aswell. So if you are using your S4 Mini mostly for tasks such as instant messaging, simply browsing the web, etc, enabling this mode surely will not interfere with those daily tasks.<br />

Tip #9 - Do not use auto brightness</h2>
By having auto brightness on, your light sensor is constantly looking for changes in the light which obviously once again consumes battery life, so you're better off by just switching the brightness level by yourself, it's not that hard anyways as you have a slider shortcut on your notification screen.<br />

Tip #10 - Limit background processes</h2>
For this last step, you need to have Developer options unlocked. If you don't know how to, I have written <a href="http://www.s4miniarchive.com/2013/08/how-to-get-developer-options-on-samsung.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a short guide</a> on how to do that. Now simply head into your Developer options and look for the option "Background process limit" - If yours is set to more than 2, it may be best to select 2. Beware that this kind of kills multitasking but it's for the sake of your battery.<br />

If you've owned an Android Samsung smartphone before, you might be familiar with the procedure. If you're new to Samsung devices, this post will guide you how to unroot or unbrick your Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini within a few minutes.<br />

To succeed in unrooting/unbricking your Galaxy S4 Mini you would need the following things:<br />

</ul>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Unrooting/Unbricking steps:</span></h2>

Step 1:</h3>
Download the USB drivers if you haven't and install them on your computer. You can also just install Samsung Kies then connect your phone and it would install all of the left-out drivers that you might not have, but be sure to close all Kies processes when you are ready to use Odin, otherwise you may experience conflicts.<br />
<br />

<h3>
Step 2:</h3>
Download the firmware from SamMobile website. Head into their firmware section which can be found in their top navigation menu and search for your model e.g. I9190, I9192, I9195. It will then display a list of available firmwares for your model, so download the one that matches your Country/Carrier, the firmware is usually hosted at Hotfile so it will take you there.<br />
Note: In order to be able to download from SamMobile, you need to register an account so do that before you download.<br />
The downloaded file will be a huge zip file approximately ~900MB in size, now extract it with a software such as WinRAR or 7Zip and you should see a .tar.md5 file inside the extracted folder.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Step 3:</h3>
Download the Odin3 program to your computer and start it up.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Step 4:</h3>
Power off your Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini completely. If you're stuck on a bootloop (e.g. the phone is displaying the boot animation over and over forever), then take off the battery and put it back in.<br />
Now begin to hold the Volume down + Home + Power buttons at the same time and you should be in Download mode as seen in the first photo above.<br />

<h3>
Step 5:</h3>
Press the volume up button on it to continue and make it ready to download.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Step 6:</h3>
Connect your Galaxy S4 Mini to your computer while it is in Download mode. I would highly recommend that you connect it to a USB port that is from the back of your computer because usually people experience problems such as the device not being detected or FAIL messages if using one of the ports from the front side.  At this point your Windows pc may recognize some more drivers and install whatever is left-out. Also be sure to still have the Odin program opened, and you should see in the COM box your phone being detected:<br />

Now remember that firmware which you extracted earlier? Click on the PDA button and you will be taken to the browsing window, now locate the .tar.md5 file and open it:<br />

Step 8:</h3>
After opening the file, you may experience a small freeze in the Odin program but don't worry, it is checking the MD5 and that could take up to 1 minute depending on your computer, so just be patient and do not panic, the program will restore itself back to it's normal state and say that MD5 check is successful:<br />

Step 9:</h3>
At this point, you are 100% ready to begin the process. Just make sure that the only options that are enabled are "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time".<br />

Step 10:</h3>
Click that Start button and it will begin transfering the stock firmware onto the S4 Mini. Please note that it is a large file and it could take up to 5, 6 minutes or even more. You should be given a loading bar on the Odin program aswell as on your phone to track the process.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Step 11:</h3>
Once it is done, you should see a green box on the Odin program that says PASS! and your phone should automatically reboot. Now after it reboots, you may notice that you have your old settings and old installed applications, it is highly recommended that you now do a data wipe through recovery mode to clean out everything from your old firmware to get rid of possible nasty bugs. Alternatively, you can use the Factory Reset option from your phone settings. If you want to use recovery mode method, continue to step 12 and 13 below.<br />

<h3>
Step 12:</h3>
Power off your phone, hold Volume up + Power + Home buttons at the same time and your phone should boot into Recovery mode.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Step 13:</h3>
Choose Wipe data/factory reset and be patient for the phone to wipe out everything. Once it is done, reboot your phone and you should be in the Setup Wizard as if you just bought your S4 Mini.<br />

How to disable home key wake up on Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

<b>jodge</b> from xda-developers forums recently posted this little mod that disables the Home key's wake up action on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. Basically when you press the Home key on your Galaxy S4 Mini while it is locked, the screen would light up.<br />
<br />
Now by applying these changes you will stop the Home button from waking up the phone, all other functions of the Home button will remain working.<br />
<br />
To do this, you would first of all need to download Total Commander from the Play Store:<br />

Please note that this procedure requires root access aswell as the Total Commander app, so if you haven't rooted your phone, you will not be able to do this.<br />

Instructions:</span></h2>

1. Open the Total Commander app and allow it root access when asked.<br />
2. Now navigate to the directory - /system/usr/keylayout<br />
3. Now copy the two files gpio-keys.kl and sec_keys.kl to a safe place, for example on your sdcard as a backup<br />
4. Open the file gpio-keys.kl and search for the following lines:<br />

5. Now remove the WAKE word on both lines aswell as the spaces and just leave it to say Key ### HOME without the spaces at the end or the WAKE words. Save the file.<br />

Now open up sec_keys.kl and search for the following line:<br />

Now as you can see in the picture above, The Galaxy S4 Mini is included in the list and we can see how the app is scheduled to be pre-installed in Android 4.4 - which means that the Galaxy S4 Mini will get the Android 4.4 KitKat update.<br />

It has been pretty obvious that the device would eventually receive the update because it's a freshly released phone and is the little brother of Samsung's flagship phone.<br />

Isn't it just awesome that one of the first custom roms that we got available for the Galaxy S4 Mini are the biggest in performance and customization - CyanogenMod and Carbon AOSP? arco68 has given us CyanogenMod10 and <b>proxuser</b> has just given us Carbon AOSP ROM (Android 4.3 Jelly Bean). This custom rom is based on <b>proxuser</b>'s modded CM10.2 kernel and device sources. This rom is compiled from carbondev sources with cyanogenmod settings and kernel.<br />

In this rom you will find a lot of difference, a little in the look and maybe in the performance as this one has some additional features that CyanogenMod does not offer.<br />

We have all been struggling with Task Killer apps that help us free up some memory, or sometimes you can just access the Task Manager and clear that memory and kill everything that is running in the background and other left-out processes.<br />
<br />
You probably wish that you wouldn't have to do that all of the time whenever you want to enjoy playing high-end games or using memory-heavy apps for your own reasons.<br />
<br />
Well, there is a very simple way to solve this issue but by doing this you sacrifice the ability to multitask on your phone, and of course, you can at any time disable this setting and get back to normal.<br />
<br />

<b>Small explanation: </b><br />
Whenever you open up an app such as the browser app and then leave it, it is still running in the background, then after that if you open up another app such as the Settings menu and go back, it may also get stuck in the background. By doing this oftenly, you might notice a slight increase in the RAM usage on your phone, preferrably more than atleast 700MB, and maybe even reach 1GB+ at some point. That's bad.<br />
<br />
It's all really simple and the only requirement is to have Developer options menu unlocked. If you are not aware of how to do that, check out <a href="http://www.s4miniarchive.com/2013/08/how-to-get-developer-options-on-samsung.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">our post that guides you how to do it</a>.<br />
<br />
Once you have access to Developer options, exit everything and go to your homescreen and from there, follow the below instructions:<br />
<b>1.</b> Go to your app drawer and open up the Settings.<br />
<br />
<b>2. </b>Go into the "More" tab and scroll down to the bottom where you should see Developer options:<br />

<b>3. </b>Head into that Developer options menu and once again scroll down to the bottom until you see the following setting:<br />

<b>4. </b>Tap on that and you should get a popup giving you a choice of how many processes you want to keep in the background, starting from no background processes at all to 4 processes at most:<br />

<b>5. </b>Once you have chosen your processes number, you may simply exit the menu. You are done! You do not need to reboot your phone for the changes to apply, neither did you have to root it in order to do this.<br />

Recently I ordered this Momax screen protector for the Galaxy S4 Mini. Now as you can see in the picture above, it says "FOR SA-Galaxy S4 mini I9190" but don't worry if you are using the LTE or Dual-SIM variant as it doesn't really matter, both 3 variants have the same front face.<br />
<br />
In the packaging, I got the following things:<br />
<ul>
<li>The screen protector</li>
<li>The cloth - to wipe the screen clean before applying the protector</li>
<li>Installation instructions cardboard</li>
</ul>
Applying this to the phone was a piece of cake, and it matches the physical home button aswell as the sensors and front camera perfectly, which means that it's been cut accurately.<br />

Has it changed the look?</h2>
Not at all, as it says on the packaging outside, "ultra-high definition", "crystal clear HD" - I couldn't notice any changes to the colors or the quality of my display after applying this, pretty much as if I don't have a screen protector applied.<br />

Does it affect the touch response?</h2>
Absolutely no issues with the touch response as it's very thin and everytime I have touched the screen, it always responds immediatelly and I don't have to touch again or anything of that sort.<br />

Does it leave visible fingerprints?</h2>
Now for that price you can't really expect something that premium, but it's definitely way better now than before when I didn't use a screen protector. The screen would become quite sticky and fingerprints were easily spotted and it was just making the phone look really ugly looking when the display is turned off.<br />

For the price range of $6 I can't really say that this is bad. The only thing which I cannot tell you about in this video is the durability with scratches. But feel free to comment here and ask me if I have gotten any scratches after a short time of usage and I'd be happy to tell.
