Carbon ROM (Android 4.4.4) for Galaxy S4 mini 3G, LTE and Duos

The Galaxy S4 mini may not ever receive an official stock 4.4.4 firmware from Samsung, but you can easily have the latest Android version thanks to AOSP roms. In this case, xda member <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=3261191" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">f4k</a> still appears to be working on unofficial builds of Carbon ROM for our S4 mini and the latest build happens to be based off Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Carbon Rom is another aftermarket firmware like CyanogenMod, AOKP, etc, 
based of the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). This unofficial build 
comes pretty light with a very low number of pre-installed applications.
 In terms of performance, it does well and everything else that I 
personally tried out appears to be working flawlessly but still keep in mind that you might encounter some small bugs when attempting to use some of the features.

Installation:</h2>
<ol>
<li>Download the rom zip file 
from the above download link to your sdcard</li>
<li>Download the Gapps package in order to have Google apps </li>
<li>Power off your phone, boot into CWM Recovery by holding Volume up + Home + Power keys simultaneously</li>
<li>Choose wipe data</li>
<li>Choose install zip</li>
<li>Choose choose zip from /storage/sdcard/1/ (choose zip from external sdcard for older recoveries)</li>
<li>Choose the rom zip file then choose Yes to confirm</li>
<li>After rom has been installed, again choose choose zip from /storage/sdcard/1/ (choose zip from external sdcard for older recoveries)</li>
<li>This time flash the gapps zip file</li>
<li>After you are done, go back and choose reboot system now</li>

US Cellular is updating its Samsung Galaxy S4 mini to 4.4.2

While Samsung is still strugling to update all three international variants of the S4 mini to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, various carriers have already updated it to 4.4.2 and the next variant to receive the update is the US Cellular S4 mini. 
 
Users should keep an eye for that notification screen as the update already appears to be rolling out, and not about to. Alternatively, Samsung Kies can also be used to check for updates if you don't happen to receive any notifications.

US Cellular did not mention any highlights for this update in their documentation but we expect that the update will include all of the features of the AOSP 4.4.2 (obviously) and some touches from Samsung applied to their TouchWiz framework.

After the Android L preview factory images were released by Google, people began attempting to port various applications for devices with an Android version ranging from ICS to KitKat. One popular application that just recently got ported by XDA member <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=5257316" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">bejunk</a> is the Android L Keyboard. 
 
For those of you who like the look and features of the new keyboard you can now easily install it on your Galaxy S4 mini and it works on both stock and AOSP roms. I personally have only tested the new keyboard on a stock 4.4.2 firmware and according to an user review, it also works flawlessly on 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Installation:</h2>
<ol>
<li>Download the zip file to your phone and extract it with an app such as RAR for Android, ES File Explorer, Root Explorer, or any other app that can do that.</li>
<li>Install the APK file just like you install a normal application and once the installation is complete, tap on Done.</li>
<li>Now using a root browsing tool such as ES File Explorer or Root Explorer, copy/move the .so file to /system/lib/</li>
<li>Set the .so file's permissions to rw-r--r-- and close the app</li>
<li>Now you should have a shortcut on your app drawer for the keyboard. Open it and follow the on-screen instructions to enable and switch to the new keyboard.</li>
</ol>
If you wish to switch to the "Material" design as shown in the screenshot above, you need to: 
<ol>
<li>Go to Keyboard settings</li>
<li>Go to Advanced (Expert) settings</li>
<li>Tap on Color scheme and choose "Material".</li>
</ol>
 
That's pretty much it. Also, it would be great if someone could test this on a stock 4.2.2 Jelly Bean firmware and post their results.

It looks like KitKat really is on its way to the Galaxy S4 mini, as the Canadian variants (SGH-I257M) have also begun receiving the software update. Unfortunately, just like the GT-I9195 LTE variant got its first update for the Black Edition only, so did the SGH-I257M. 
 

It's interesting how Samsung has decided to give the Black Edition variants the priority to first receive these software updates and not the originals. Although the firmwares are meant for the Black Edition, it appears that you may still be able to flash them on your non-Black Edition models without any issues as you may have already seen the demo video of 4.4.2 running on an original GT-I9195. 
 
We assume that the changes that you will find in the firmware will be exactly the same as in the GT-I9195 firmware and the only difference might be some specific country/carrier bloatware. 
 
If you want to try out the new firmware on your Canadian S4 mini, you may head into <a href="http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">SamMobile's firmware page</a> and search for "SGH-I257M".

Surprisingly, this new KitKat firmware got released first for the GT-I9195 Black Edition and not the regular one and as of now there is only one build available which is meant for the country Belgium, carrier Proximus and for the Black Edition. The build date of the firmware says Fri, 23 May 2014 which means it was under testing for a whole 20 days (let's hope we don't experience any bugs!). 
 
If you wish to try it out, then you may head onto the <a href="http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=30856" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">firmware's download page</a> and download it. 
 
<strike>UPDATE:</strike> 
<strike>KNOX has been removed, the rom flashed succesfully and is so far working well. I advise you to not flash the package with the KNOX bootloader and wait a few minutes for the KNOX-free one to be uploaded.</strike>

Turns out the issue was not caused by adding a Google account or similar. I have personally tried wiping data, cache, even installing the package again but the phone would still crash and overheat like crazy. Yet when the firmware was flashed untouched (with the KNOX bootloader files), it runs perfectly and hasn't crashed in more than 20 hours now. 
 
This post will be updated once newer builds appear as well as builds for the I9190 and I9192 so be sure to check regularly.

Samsung's smartphones seem to have huge popularity in India and you may have noticed that the company simply does not support LTE connectivity in the country judging by the devices being sold in the stores that only have support up to 3G networks. 
 
However, since carriers are soon going to bring faster wireless access (talking about LTE), Samsung fans from India might get the chance to soon try out a Galaxy S4 mini LTE variant which according to an import tracking site called Zauba showing that Samsung is in the process of testing devices with LTE networks in the country.

Currently, only one carrier (Airtel) supports LTE connectivity in India but the issue is that they use TD-LTE band, which is only supported by the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c but this leaked information shows that Samsung could be testing the device so that they can prepare the launch of LTE devices in the future. 
 

Whether a LTE variant of the S4 mini will be available for sale in India, nobody knows for sure.

CyanogenMod11 (Android 4.4.2) for Galaxy S4 mini Duos (GT-I9192)

So it has finally happened. After so much waiting, the Galaxy S4 mini Duos now has a CyanogenMod11 build available and it's not just a low-quality port filled with lots of bugs but rather a "stable" one as if you were using a I9190 or I9195 and huge thanks goes to xda member <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=5368296">sekil</a> who is developing it.

Just like on the I9190 and I9195, this CM11 build for the Duos model runs just fine in terms of performance and battery life according to some users' reviews. Another great thing worth mentioning here is that it also has support for two SIM cards. That's right, you can use both of your SIM cards without any issues on this rom.

Installation:</h2>
In order to succesfully install CM11 on your Galaxy S4 mini Duos, you first need to root it and have CWM Recovery installed. If you haven't done that then check out <a href="http://www.s4miniarchive.com/2013/08/how-to-root-and-install-cwm-recovery-on_4872.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this post</a> which will show you how to root and obtain CWM Recovery. 
 
Once you are done, begin following the instructions below: 
<ol>
<li>Download the rom zip file 
from the above download link to your sdcard</li>
<li>Download the Gapps package in order to have Google apps </li>
<li>Power off your phone, boot into CWM Recovery by holding Volume up + Home + Power keys simultaneously</li>
<li>Choose wipe data</li>
<li>Choose install zip</li>
<li>Choose choose zip from /storage/sdcard/1/ (choose zip from external sdcard for older recoveries)</li>
<li>Choose the rom zip file then choose Yes to confirm</li>
<li>After rom has been installed, again choose choose zip from /storage/sdcard/1/ (choose zip from external sdcard for older recoveries)</li>
<li>This time flash the gapps zip file</li>
<li>After you are done, go back and choose reboot system now</li>
</ol>
That's it. You should now have a perfectly fine working CM11 on your Galaxy S4 mini Duos.
